Lindbergh's Reindeer
Lake
Lodge
Big water means big
fish and this defines Reindeer Lake. Reindeer is an incredible
fishery for Northern Pike, Lake Trout, Walleye, and Arctic
Grayling.
This massive body of water stretches over 200 miles with 96
tributaries. Do not let the size scare you. With over 5745 islands,
Reindeer is easy to fish during windy conditions. During long boat
rides to the prime spots, you are not going to get pounded. Fishing
Reindeer is like fishing a lot of small lakes connected together. It
is not uncommon for many of Reindeer's anglers to catch their
personal best in all four species. Reindeer's guides are native Cree
Indians and speak fluent English and their native language. They
have an amazing understanding on how to navigate such a massive body
of water.
Reindeer Lake Lodge has been
owned and operated by Brian and Charmaine Simms since
1996. The Simms have put all their time and efforts in
creating one of the finest fishing resorts in all of Canada.
Reindeer Lake Lodge
accommodates
28 guests in eight clean and spacious log style cabins. Each
morning you will be greeted by fresh coffee delivered right
to your cabin. Reindeers staff will have your room spotless
when you return from a long day on the lake and don't forget to
try the daily appetizers. A full service breakfast is
served every morning, as well as your evening cuisine, which is
second to none in the industry. With your catch of the day,
your guide will prepare you a true Canadian shore lunch over
an open fire pit. The main lodge has a feeling of the northwoods with plenty of space to unwind and a full service
bar. The lodge also has a pool table, dart board, and a
great selection of movies.
Reindeer
Lake Lodge also has two outposts available, Reilly Lake
Deluxe Outpost and MacKenzie Lake Outpost. Reilly Lake Deluxe
Outpost sits on 70 square mile lake that flows into
Reindeer Lake's Vermillion Bay. The outpost has two
beautiful log cabins with hot showers and flush toilets.
There is also an onsite manager there at all times. The
boats are 16' Alumarine equipped with 30 HP 4-stroke motors,
fish locators, and trolling motors. All food is provided by
the main lodge.
If you want to be a little
more adventurous, then try the MacKenzie Lake Outpost. This
camp is settled on a lake that measures 8 miles in length
and 3.5 miles wide and is fed by the Tyme Hill River System
that flows into the NW corner of Reindeer Lake. This is the
only cabin on the lake. The boats are 16' Lund with
dependable 20 HP motors.
Have you ever heard the
saying, "90% of the fish are in 10% of the water." Well there
is some truth to that when your talking about early season
pike in northern Canada. This period, known as ice-out, can
be, "Katie by the door!" With such extreme cold, and ice with
depths of double digits, it takes a long time to thaw. A lot
of the larger glacier lakes will still have ice on them into
mid June. Pike spawn in early and mid spring, then move into
the warmest water they can find, which are the shallow
bays. There they go on a feeding frenzy.
Many large pike can be had in
as little as two feet of water. The action can be so good, it
can bring tears of joy to the toughest dude. Just about
anything with a hook will work. Pike are active feeders for
most of the short season, so they can store enough fat cells
to sustain themselves through the colder months. Sight
fishing is one of the best techniques to catch these fresh
water gators. As summer approaches, the vegetation starts to
mature and water temperatures start to level out and pike start
to fan out. That is when you need to become more versatile
in your fishing methods. You can still find large numbers of
pike in shallow grassy areas, but there are other places
that can hold bigger, more active fish. Cabbage is what to
look for in both shallow and deep waters.
Being a musky angler, sight
fishing is not something commonly practiced. I am not
knocking it and would not dare abandon it, but you cannot
say it doesn't feel better to hang a trophy you did not
expect, than to dangle a slug-go in front of her nose. Call
me a purist, but I like a more of a level playing field.
It
seems more of a sport to me. Note: Look for more pike
strategies on our web sight next month.

tackle page)
